Sri Lanka – where do we go?

  • DAY 1 Arrival

We’ll arrive at the Sri Lankan international airport in Negombo. We’ll spend the first night in Negombo and we’ll start to acclimatize.
  • DAY 2 - 3 Travel to Kandy

The next day we’ll enjoy some culture in Kandy. We’ll see the most important Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka – the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. We’ll spend two nights here.
  • DAY 4 By train through tea plantations

We’ll take a train from Kandy to Ella. We’ll ride through tea plantations with stunning scenery. Watch the video. If everything goes as planned, the ride will take about 6 hours.
  • DAY 5 - 6 The village of Ella and the jungle

Off we go to the Highlands, to a small village of Ella surrounded by hills with tea. We’ll go for a trip through the jungle and tea plantations. We’ll spend two nights here.
  • DAY 7 Nuwara Eliya and tea factory

After Ella we’ll take a bus and cool off a bit (hopefully the driver won’t chew betel, last time was very excited = fast). Our destination is Nuwara Eliya, the capital of the Highlands with preserved colonial architecture. On the way we’ll stop for tea and visit a factory where tea leaves are processed. We’ll spend one night in Nuwara Eliya.
  • DAY 8 History of Dambulla and Sigiriya

Next we’ll explore some history. We’ll go to Dambulla to see the cave temple. We can also visit Sigiriya, an ancient town on the rocks. We’ll spend one night here.
  • DAY 9 - 11 Nuwara Eliya and tea factory

After Ella we’ll take a bus and cool off a bit (hopefully the driver won’t chew betel, last time was very excited = fast). Our destination is Nuwara Eliya, the capital of the Highlands with preserved colonial architecture. On the way we’ll stop for tea and visit a factory where tea leaves are processed. We’ll spend one night in Nuwara Eliya.
  • DAY 12 - 15 History of Dambulla and Sigiriya

Next we’ll explore some history. We’ll go to Dambulla to see the cave temple. We can also visit Sigiriya, an ancient town on the rocks. We’ll spend one night here.
  • Dream beaches and diving

From Dambulla we’ll go to have a swim and relax on the beaches of Nilaveli. We can go snorkelling in a small coral garden, catch fish, visit the nearby Trincomalee and its beautiful Hindu temple and fortress built in the 17th century by the Dutch. We’ll spend three nights in Nilaveli.
  • Home cuisine and the local people

Let’s go and see Heenkenda. We’ll go to Gewalseeya, a small village south of Anuradhapura. We’ll be accommodated by three neighbouring families. We’ll talk to them in Sinhalese, taste Sri Lankan specialities and we’ll go to some English lessons. We’ll also take a trip to Anuradhapura, where Heenkenda will guide us through this important Buddhist site. We’ll spend four nights in Gewalseeya.
  • DAY 16 Colombo, the last souvenirs and departure

On the last day we’ll take a train to the capital city of Colombo. We’ll buy rare spices, visit Galle face and in the evening or the next morning we’ll fly home.

I highly recommend it to all who do not want to travel and explore the country from a traveling train. To learn a foreign country, you usually have to spend more than 22 days in it. Perhaps you won`t even visit all places, however with Kuba, you will learn much more than with any travel agency or by traveling alone. For such a short time, you will not find locals who will let you live, eat and possibly work with them. And if you get closer to yourself and you live with them, you will know with your own eyes as I do lives in Nepal.

  • We have chosen to explore Nepal as a group of adventurers who have not known much before departure. What, however, was magical is that we all became friends, even though we all had a totally different vocation in life. We all get connected by the force of the concept of guys from TravelNative. This is the way that can be made only by people who really want to know, to be tolerant and personified to deserve the beauty of nature and their culture. We are all human, and we are all able to do it. It was an unforgettable month. Thank you!

  • In November 2017, I visited Asia for the first time, and I am glad that just under the guidance of Kuba and Standa who, with extraordinary fervor and dexterity, have proven to me that I could enjoy the miraculous nature and distant culture of Nepal all the time. Naturally, none of this would have been possible if the impeccable atmosphere that was created by all the fellow travelers was lacking. I most appreciated the work of boys when there was an unexpected hitch (in a country like Nepal lurking at every corner). Without unnecessary postponements, and especially with a cold head, they embarked on a solution. The advantage was the fact that they know many local people. Let photos talk about that. So Kuba and Standa thanks! I look forward to another adventure.

Do you want to have adventurous vacation?

1What should I take?
Backpack (50l is enough, ideally with a cape), can be used as hand luggage, lighter clothing such as shorts and a t-shirt, something warmer for the highlands such as trousers, long sleeve, light jacket, shoes: sandals, ankle boots (hiking boots), space-saving flip flops (slip-ons), first aid kit: patch, pain killers, pills with minerals, diarrhoea medicine, insect repellent (with at least 25% of DEET), head lamp (small), sunscreen + sunglasses, poncho (rain coat), bottle for water (at least 1 litre, light), travel insurance policy card + vaccination certificate (to be issued by the doctor during vaccination) + passport • Copies of all documents (paper as well as stored online - very useful in case the papers are lost) • Extra finance
2What should I take not to carry too much?
You need to carry everything on your back (alternatively your things are carried by a paid bearer), please take that into account. You don’t need useless things in the mountains – cosmetics, computer, tablet or the whole wardrobe. It also depends on the season, winter months (November to March) are cooler, therefore you need warmer things. There are no showers in the mountains, just a bucket and cold water – all you need is a small towel and a small bottle with shower gel. Sleeping bag is needed in routes with no facilities – if we’re going there, we’ll tell you before we go. We’ll talk about all details in person.
3Do I need visas to Sri Lanka and how do I get them?
Visas to Sri Lanka are requested online on the following website: https://eta.gov.lk/etaslvisa/etaNavServ?payType=1. If you need any help, call us.
4What is the weather and temperature going to be like?
Sri Lanka is located in the tropical zone with high temperatures throughout the whole year. You don’t need to carry the whole wardrobe, all shoes and electronic devices. You just need a camera and a few pieces of clothing. In the highlands with tea plantations, you’ll need warmer clothing. We’ll be in altitudes of 1,500 to 2,000 metres above sea level, where days and nights are cooler (10-15 degrees centigrade).
5What about vaccination, do I need any?
For vaccination make an appointment in a travellers’ medicine centre. We have good personal experience with Avenier vaccination centres. You can arrange consultation and initial vaccination using the following website: https://www.ockovacicentrum.cz/cz. The current price list is here: https://www.ockovacicentrum.cz/cz/cenik. For a selection of destinations with recommended vaccination by countries visit: https://www.ockovacicentrum.cz/cz/ockovani-na-cesty.
6How much money to take, should I change before I leave or when I reach the destination?
Our recommendation is to change Czech Crowns (CZK) to US Dollars (USD) at home. Then you should change dollars in the destination. Sometimes you can pay by credit card (mostly a percentage of the price is added, usually 3-5%). ATM withdrawals are possible, but are charged by a fixed amount + your bank’s fee. It is advisable to have some extra money just in case. Our recommendation is 15-20% extra of the total amount (without flight ticket).
7Where to arrange for travel insurance?
Travel insurance is definitely recommended. You never know what might happen. If you travel a lot and you don’t mind paying a little bit extra, we recommend year-round membership in Alpenverein, which also includes insurance coverage. For more information see http://www.oeav.cz/ or you can arrange traditional travel insurance online. There are many providers of travel insurance. The cheapest is Slavia pojišťovna. Below is a link to their online form: http://travel.slavia-pojistovna.cz/Controllers/FormSteps/_TravelSlavia_Step1.php?pid=98268083
8What is included in the price?
The price mentioned on our website is an approximate sum of all costs of usual life in the destination. The price includes the costs of accommodation, food – three times a day, transport from place to place, entrance fees, reward for the locals for their services, guide fees and our fees. The price DOES NOT INCLUDE the flight ticket (we are happy to recommend the cheapest fares). For the price you will SURVIVE, but most importantly you will ENJOY a true traveller’s holiday. The price does NOT include drinks, souvenirs, clothing and other useless things you won’t need.
9Who is a guide and how it works?
We’ll take you on the first trip (more about us in ‘Who we are’). In the future we would like to leave everything to the locals, who will be able to earn some money for better living. But you don’t have to be afraid. We have known them for a long time and we would let them look after our children (if we had any).
10Dates and number of days
The dates are chosen based on our experience, weather, cultural events, and recommendations of our friends in the destinations. We usually take smaller groups of people (around 6), who need to agree on a date. This can sometimes be difficult but we believe there is always a way. It’s similar with the number of days. We have a rough plan for each destination. We won’t restrict you in terms of what you do in the destinations. We don’t have to be together all the time like a group of schoolchildren. But if you want to go somewhere else for a different number of days, maybe it’s better to go on your own. Again, there is always a way.
11Number of travellers + free places
The best is a group of 5 to 7 people. Free places are always announced on our website and on social networks.
12What are the risks?
We’re travelling to less developed countries with different fauna and flora. We won’t be trying to make you believe that there are no risks. There are some. We are aware of many of them, therefore, we are planning everything to avoid them. We won’t list them all to make you worried. But if you are interested, we will discuss everything in person and explain what to expect. We have two rules in this respect. It is counter-productive to think about the risks too much and eventually invite them. You can be hit by a car in front of your house.
13Is there a guarantee of an unforgettable traveller’s holiday?
We believe that gaining experiences is a key aspect of travelling. Therefore, we started to offer these opportunities. There is only one guarantee: We’ll do everything for you to enjoy the journey with us and to experience something unforgettable...
